Oppenheimer Blue Diamond
The 14.62-carat diamond sets a new
GENEVA - 18. May 2016 - A large blue diamond that's
known as the Oppenheimer Blue, was sold at a Christie's auction in Geneva for the record price of $50.6
This is a new auction record to date for diamond sales, while
the diamond is the largest blue diamond.
Named after its former owner Sir Philip Oppenheimer, a British diamond and gold mining entrepreneur, the diamond weighs 14.62 carats,
The auction, which lasted 20 minutes, was
expected to get $46m for the diamond. The bidding was done over the phone, with the buyer's identity
This Oppenheimer Blue diamond was
auctioned in 2013 at Sotheby's, being sold for $83m at the time. But the buyer defaulted on payment and the diamond
was taken back.
